Discover Puerto Rico Launches Workcation Contest

If remote workers are tired of Zoom calls, imagine how sick they are of virtual backgrounds. Discover Puerto Rico has launched a promotion to turn the beach backdrop into a reality. (Sorry, Zoom still comes with the territory).

Deskover Puerto Rico, as the program is known, will award six two-week “workations” to the Caribbean island. Because Puerto Rico is a U.S. property, it doesn’t require work visas, passports or insurance requirements for U.S. citizens. The DMO is touting several other amenities not normally associated with beach trips, including 31 internet providers and three 5G networks to facilitate video chats.

Interested parties have until May 13 to submit applications, which must highlight what the person would accomplish when mixing business and pleasure.

Winners will be rewarded with one round trip economy plane ticket for two weeks on the island. They will stay in various venues (all with free Wi-Fi) showcasing Puerto Rico’s different selling points including:

  • A floating villa off the northeast coast of Fajardo;
  • An historic apartment among the brightly colored houses and cobblestone streets of Old San Juan;
  • A one-bedroom suite at Copamarina Beach Resort & Spa;
  • A Regency Suite at the Hyatt Grand Reserve;
  • A three-bedroom condo in the popular Palmas del Mar resort on the Island’s east central coast.

In presenting the offer, Discover Puerto Rico is aiming to fill a need while showcasing the destination as a place to stay, play and do business. A Harris Poll found that 74% of Americans tired of working from home would consider a workation.

The offer also highlights safety precautions taken at the island’s airports and key venues, an added selling point as the DMO looks to woo group travel as travel re-opens.

"Puerto Rico is a great option for travelers looking to work remotely from unique accommodations, seeking warm temperatures, rich history, a plethora of outdoor attractions, delectable cuisine, and an international flair," said Brad Dean, CEO of Discover Puerto Rico. "Puerto Rico is committed to providing a safe travel experience, given the prioritization of health and safety measures and entry requirements."
